Professor Keith Alexander has been at the forefront of developments in education, research and practice in Facilities Management (FM) for over twenty years. Keith created and directs the Centre for Facilities Management (CFM), which has operated as a University-based research unit and network of blue-chip companies (Facilities Management Foundation) in the United Kingdom for 15 years. CFM relocated from Glasgow to Manchester in 2000 where Keith holds a Chair of Facilities Management at Salford University.  

Keith was educated and qualified as an Architect (RIBA), and subsequently qualified as a Facilities Manager (CFM). He is an elected Fellow of the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) and of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). 

Keith has lead important national, European and international initiatives in education, research and practice. He created one of the first Masters programmes in FM in the world in 1986, was a founder and the first elected Chairman of the European Facility Management Network (EuroFM) and created the International Faculty of Facilities Management (IFFM). He has also contributed to the development of international standards for the recognition of FM courses and the accreditation of FM professionals.

Keith has broad, direct experience of FM practice, through working with member organisations of the FM Foundation to improve business performance through effective FM strategy, tactics and operations. CFM undertakes strategic reviews and organises forums and focus groups of leading practitioners in order to understand and share best practice and to promote innovation. 

Keith supervises a diverse, international group of postgraduate research students and leads the CFM team of research fellows, associates and scholars. Through CFM, he leads a large programme of action research, which aims to advance knowledge of Facilities Management and to ensure its effective application in practice. He has also led major, funded research in the United Kingdom and has participated in European and international projects. Keith is a regular organiser of, and contributor to, major Facilities Management publications, seminars and conferences around the world.

Keith continues to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate courses in FM at Salford University and as a visiting professor in sister institutions around the world. He holds advisory appointments and acts as external examiner to postgraduate courses in FM in Europe, Australiasia and SEAsia.
